I. When Is the 2026 Chicago Marathon?

2026 Chicago Marathon Guide: Schedule, Course Map, Prize Money, Live Stream & Results

Image from chicagomarathon, Copyright by original author

Race Day: 📅 Sunday, October 11, 2026. However, for participants and sports fans, the real Chicago Marathon Race Week begins on October 8.

⏰ Complete 2026 Race Week Schedule

Date Event Chicago Local Time (CT) Location
Oct 8 (Thu) Abbott Health & Fitness Expo 10:00–18:00 McCormick Place
Oct 9 (Fri) Abbott Health & Fitness Expo 09:00–18:00 McCormick Place
Oct 10 (Sat) Abbott Chicago 5K From 07:30 Downtown
Oct 10 (Sat) Abbott Health & Fitness Expo 09:00–18:00 McCormick Place
Oct 11 (Sun) 🏃 Bank of America Chicago Marathon Pre-race from 05:30; waves from 7:20 Grant Park
Oct 11 (Sun) 27th Mile Post-Race Party 09:30–16:00 Grant Park

Time Zone Note: Chicago observes CDT (UTC−5) in October. International viewers should convert to their local time accordingly.

🏃 What Time Does the 2026 Chicago Marathon Start?

Here's an important point: not all runners start at the same time. The 2026 race uses a staggered start with Professional Wheelchair, Handcycle, Professional, High Performance Program, and Wave 1, Wave 2, and Wave 3 groups.

⏰ October 11, 2026 Race Day Schedule

Time (CT) Event
05:30 Grant Park opens to runners / Gear Check opens / Start Corrals open
07:20 Wave 1 start corrals close / Men's Professional Wheelchair start
07:21 Women's Professional Wheelchair start
07:23 Handcycle start
07:30 🥇 Men's / Women's Professional start
07:32 High Performance Program start
07:35 Wave 1 start
08:00 Wave 2 start
08:10 Wave 3 start corrals close
08:35 Wave 3 start
09:30 Grant Park opens to spectators / 27th Mile Post-Race Party begins
16:00 Gear Check / 27th Mile Post-Race Party ends

Source: Chicago Marathon Participant Information

⚠️ A Common Confusion: 7:20 a.m. Is NOT the Mass Runner Start Time. Many first-time Chicago Marathon viewers see "7:20 a.m." and assume the race starts then. It doesn't—7:20 is when Wave 1 start corrals close, and also when the Men's Professional Wheelchair race begins. What follows: 7:21 Women's Professional Wheelchair, 7:23 Handcycle, 7:30 Professional Men/Women, 7:32 High Performance Program, 7:35 Wave 1, 8:00 Wave 2, 8:35 Wave 3.

So if you're a regular age-group runner, your actual start time depends on which Wave and Start Corral you're assigned to. The official recommendation is to arrive at your assigned corral about 20 minutes before it closes.

II. Can You Still Register for the 2026 Chicago Marathon?

Want to run Chicago but discovered registration seems closed? Don't close the page just yet. As of September 29, 2026, the main official registration channels for new runners for the 2026 race are closed. The 2026 race takes place on October 11; official 2026 charity registration closed on September 15, tour operator registration closed on August 16, and the general drawing and other major guaranteed entry applications ended long ago. We're past the "wait and see if general registration opens" stage.

However, if you already have a 2026 entry, note this: if you can't participate, the official cancellation policy still allows eligible participants to cancel before October 7 and receive a guaranteed entry for 2027 (you must re-apply and pay the 2027 entry fee).

What's truly worth preparing for now is the next cycle: 🏃‍♀️ 2027 Chicago Marathon registration, with the window 🗓️ opening October 8, 2026 (Thursday) at 08:00 and closing October 29, 2026 (Thursday) at 14:00 (U.S. Central Time). Race day is October 10, 2027 (Sunday), the 49th edition. If you missed the 2026 race, October 8 is the next critical registration date.

So if you don't have a valid 2026 entry, don't believe online claims about "last-minute transfers," "internal entries," or "discounted proxy registration." Focus directly on the 2027 application.

III. Do You Have to Go to the Expo to Pick Up Your Bib?

Yes. All participants must go to the Abbott Health & Fitness Expo during designated hours to pick up their Bib Number and Timing Device in person, presenting a government-issued photo ID matching the name used for registration. The official policy requires participants to pick up their own packets; race day pickup is not available.

So if you're flying to Chicago from overseas to run: ❗Do not schedule your Expo visit too tightly. For example, arriving Saturday night and running Sunday morning is very risky. A better approach: arrive Thursday/Friday → Expo packet pickup → familiarize yourself with the course → adjust your sleep schedule → race Sunday.

🏟️ Abbott Health & Fitness Expo Guide

📍 Location: McCormick Place, North Building, Level 3 – Hall B1
⏰ Hours: Oct 8, 10:00–18:00; Oct 9, 09:00–18:00; Oct 10, 09:00–18:00

🪪 How to Pick Up Your Bib: First-time participants often overlook this: ⚠️ You must pick up your packet in person. Bring: Packet Pick-up email + government-issued photo ID. The participant packet includes: Bib number, Timing Device, Participant Bag, Nike Running Shirt. Friends or family cannot pick up on your behalf.

🚇 How to Get to the Expo: Official guidance strongly recommends public transit during Race Weekend:

  • 🚇 CTA Green Line: To Cermak-McCormick Place, then walk

  • 🚌 CTA Bus: #3 King Drive, #4 Cottage Grove

  • 🚆 Metra Electric: Official recommendation for Expo travel between downtown and McCormick Place

Rideshare / Taxi: Drop-off available near McCormick Place. Follow event signage.

IV. 2026 Chicago Marathon Course

2026 Chicago Marathon Guide: Schedule, Course Map, Results, Live Stream & 2027 Lottery

Image from chicagomarathon, Copyright by original author

If the New York Marathon is a super city tour, one of Chicago's greatest charms is: run one marathon and "tour" all of Chicago. The official description is Flat and Fast, and this course has produced seven world records.

📏 How Hard Is the Chicago Marathon Course?

Geographically, Chicago is indeed one of the flattest courses among the world's top marathons. The total elevation gain is approximately 90–240 feet across the entire 26.2 miles—one of the flattest Major courses anywhere. But "flat" doesn't mean "easy." What to really watch for:

  • 26.2 miles is a massive challenge regardless

  • The start may be crowded

  • Very large number of participants

  • Second-half energy management

  • Chicago's October weather can change

  • Wind conditions off Lake Michigan can affect how it feels

  • Spectators are incredibly enthusiastic, which can make you speed up without realizing it

So first-time marathoners: don't underestimate the race just because "Chicago is flat."

🌡️ Course Elevation & Weather History

Elevation: The course features minimal elevation changes, with an overall gain of less than 100 feet in some measurements and around 240 feet in others. The only notable "hill" is the Roosevelt Road bridge near Mile 26, affectionately called "Mount Roosevelt" by runners.

Weather History (Average October Conditions):

  • Average race day high: 66°F / 19°C

  • Average race day low: 50°F / 10°C

  • Average start temperature: 52°F / 11°C

  • Most common conditions: Partially cloudy, moderate humidity

  • Wind: Can be a factor, especially along exposed sections near the lake

Race day temperature extremes have ranged from a low of 21°F to a high of 89°F. October weather in Chicago can vary significantly, so check the forecast closely in the final 3–5 days.

V. Chicago Marathon Course Time Limit

The 2026 official course time limit is 6 hours 30 minutes, with the official pace reference of 15 minutes per mile (approximately 9:19/km).

A common misunderstanding: 6:30:00 ÷ 42.195 km ≈ 9:15/km, but the official management uses a 15-minute-mile pace. So when preparing, go by the official 15-minute-mile cutoff, not a simple kilometer conversion.

If a runner cannot maintain approximately 15 minutes per mile, they may be required to move to the sidewalk, and course services end as streets reopen. Finishing beyond the time limit may mean your result is not recorded or published as an official finisher.

VI. 2026 Course Aid Stations: Essential for Participants

This section is genuinely bookmark-worthy for anyone racing. The 2026 Chicago Marathon has 20 aid stations, approximately every 1–2 miles. Aid stations typically include: Medical Tent, Portable Toilets, Gatorade Endurance Formula (Lemon-Lime), Public Address, Water. The official event also provides Runner Transport vehicles to bring runners who cannot continue back to Grant Park (non-emergency transport).

🧃 Maurten Energy Gels: For 2026, Maurten is the official Hydrogel Sports Fuel. Hydrogel Fuel Depots are located at Mile 12.4 (Aid Station 9), Mile 15.7 (Aid Station 12), and Mile 18.1 (Aid Station 14), offering Caffeinated Gel 100 and non-caffeinated Gel 100 (25g carbs each). The official request: take only one per station to ensure supply for runners behind you.

⚠️ Note: Station locations are subject to the final pre-race Participant Guide. Minor course adjustments near race day could slightly shift aid station placement.

🍌 Bananas in the Second Half: Aid Stations 16–18 (Miles 20.2–23) provide Chiquita Bananas—a traditional solid fuel that's genuinely useful for runners entering the final phase.

💧 Can You Bring Your Own Water? Yes. And 2026 has a notable new feature: 🆕 Culligan Water Refill Stations—four new refill points on course: before Aid Station 4 (Mile 5.7), before Aid Station 7 (Mile 10.1), before Aid Station 12 (Mile 15.7), and before Aid Station 16 (Mile 20.3). Runners can refill approved personal hydration containers with Culligan filtered water here—Chicago is the first Major to officially offer personal container refill service on course.

Approved personal containers include: Fuel Belt, Handheld Water Bottle, Soft Flask.

❌ Hydration backpacks with built-in reservoirs are prohibited. Don't prepare based on trail-running habits.

🧊 What's Around Mile 21? Around Mile 21.2, watch for the Biofreeze Pain Relief Zone (near Cermak Road / Archer Avenue). The official Biofreeze Cooling Crew provides cooling and relief support for second-half runners.

VII. What Is a Start Corral?

Chicago uses a Start Corral system. All participants are assigned to a corral based on qualifying standards, information submitted during registration, anticipated finish time, and past Chicago Marathon performances. Simple version: faster anticipated times generally mean earlier corrals. Before race day, check your Wave, Corral, Start Area, and entry time—don't study the map on race morning.

👉 Official Start Corrals Info: Start Corrals

🏃 Pace Team: What If You Don't Know How to Pace? Chicago offers a Pace Team. Pacers lead runners at designated target paces—very useful for first-time marathoners. The official note: Pace Team uses Chip Time (timing starts when you cross the start mat), not gun time.

More importantly, you don't have to stay with a pacer the whole way. The official policy allows joining at the start, moving ahead mid-race, dropping back, or using the Pace Team for just one segment. Don't think of it as "must stay from start to finish."

VIII. Gear Check

On race day, if you need to check items, use the Clear Plastic Participant Bag provided by the event—not your own backpack. Official requirements: use the event-issued clear bag, properly attach the Gear Check tag from your bib, and present your bib to collect your bag. Do not check valuables (wallets, jewelry, phones, cameras, electronics).

⏰ Gear Check closes at 16:00. If you finish after 3:30 p.m., your Gear Check bag may be available in the area immediately west of the finish line or at the Hilton Chicago Grand Tradition Room (Sunday 5:30–7:00 p.m., Monday 8:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.).

IX. Can Regular Spectators Enter the Start and Finish Areas?

This is a crucial question for on-site spectating. The answer isn't simply "the entire Grant Park is closed." The official arrangement: Grant Park primarily serves participants and race operations early on, opening to spectators at 9:30 a.m. So the start corrals and controlled finish areas are not freely accessible to regular spectators during the race start.

So don't plan to "walk into the start corral with my friend and wait at the finish line." A more practical approach: watch along the course → use CTA to move → track via app → meet at the official reunion area (after the race, head to the 27th Mile Post-Race Party to meet runners—see Section XIX).

X. The 2026 Official App Is Absolutely Worth Downloading

Official App: Bank of America Chicago Marathon App, Powered by TCS. It's not just for runners—spectators need it too. The 2026 official app includes:

  • 🏃 Unlimited Live Runner Tracking

  • 📍 Interactive Course Map

  • 🥇 Professional Athlete Profiles

  • 📺 Live Broadcast Streaming

  • 🧑‍🤝‍🧑 Bib Share

  • 📊 Leaderboards

  • 📈 Real-time race results

👨‍👩‍👧 Correct Spectator Approach: If a friend is running, the correct flow is Bib → App → Tracking → Estimated pass times → CTA → Next viewing point. This is far smarter than standing in one spot for four hours.

🚇 How to Chase the Same Runner All Day? The official event has mapped course miles to CTA stations. These are especially useful:

Approx. Course Location CTA Station Exit & Walking Directions
Mile 1 / 3 / 12.5 Grand (Red Line) Walk to LaSalle (Mile 3) and Wells (Mile 12.5)
Mile 2 Jackson (Red/Blue) Exit directly to course
Mile 3.5 / 12.25 Chicago (Red Line) Walk to LaSalle (Mile 3.5) and Wells (Mile 12.25)
Mile 4 / 12 Clark/Division (Red Line) Walk to LaSalle (Mile 4) and Wells (Mile 12)
Mile 8 Sheridan (Red Line) Walk 4 blocks east to Broadway
Mile 8.5 Addison (Red Line) Exit directly to course
Mile 11 Sedgwick (Brown Line) Walk half-block north to North Avenue
Mile 13.5 Washington/Wells (Brown/Pink/Orange) Walk 2 blocks west to Wacker Drive
Mile 14 / 17 UIC-Halsted (Blue Line) Walk to Adams (Mile 14) or Jackson (Mile 17)

Mile 25 Cermak-McCormick Place (Green Line) Walk 2 blocks east to Michigan
Finish Roosevelt (Red/Green/Orange) Walk east to Museum Campus / Grant Park

Source: Chicago Marathon Spectator Information

👨‍👩‍👧 How to Design a "Moving Spectator Route": For example, consider: Near start → Mile 4 → Chinatown Mile 21.5 → Near finish. But don't be greedy. To see a runner 3–4 times in one day, calculate based on their expected pace: runner's arrival time, walking time, CTA entry time, wait time, transfer time, crowd time (especially in the second half as crowds grow).

📸 Best Spectator Spots?

🥇 Chinatown (approx. Mile 21.5): Second half of the race, runners desperately need spectator encouragement, distinctive Chicago neighborhood character, easy access via Cermak-Chinatown station. If you can only pick one place to cheer for a friend, Chinatown is highly recommended.

🥈 Greektown (approx. Mile 14 / 17): Good for family, photography, cheering, and observing runners as the race enters the mid-to-late stages. Accessible via UIC-Halsted station.

🥉 Downtown / Loop: Very lively in the early miles—great for first-time Chicago Marathon viewers to feel "the whole city is running a marathon."

📸 Where to Find Photos? The official Results page offers Race Day Photos (provided by MarathonFoto). After the race, follow the official process to view your photos.

XI. Where to Watch the 2026 Chicago Marathon Live?

This is definitely one of sports fans' most burning questions.

🇺🇸 U.S. Viewers: The 2026 official broadcast has been announced. NBC 5 Chicago (full English broadcast), Telemundo Chicago (full Spanish broadcast), and streaming channels including Peacock, Roku, Fire TV, Samsung TV Plus, Xumo Play, Pluto, Google TV, TCL, Xfinity, and FreeVee.

⏰ U.S. Broadcast Time: October 11, 07:00–11:00 CT. nbcchicago.com, telemundochicago.com, and related apps also provide additional finish line coverage. The finish line camera streams exclusively on nbcchicago.com and the NBC 5 Chicago News streaming channel from 11:00–15:00 CT, so family can watch runners cross the line.

XII. 2026 Elite Athletes to Watch

The 2026 professional field is extremely compelling—one of the deepest elite fields in Chicago Marathon history.

🇺🇬 Jacob Kiplimo (Men's Defending Champion): 2025 Chicago champion (2:02:23, second-fastest in event history). Since then, he's leveled up: 2026 London Marathon 2:00:28 (third-fastest ever), half marathon world record (Lisbon 57:20), and a third consecutive World Cross Country title.

Kiplimo said pre-race: "Defending the title means even more than winning it. I believe I can compete with anyone in the world right now."

🇪🇹 Hawi Feysa (Women's Defending Champion): Won 2025 Chicago by over 2 minutes (2:14:57). She acknowledged defending is harder:

"Chicago is known for being fast and fiercely competitive. I hope to run a personal best, but the most important thing is to fight for a podium spot."

👟 Men's Key Athletes

Athlete Country PB
Jacob Kiplimo 🇺🇬 Uganda 2:00:28 (London 2026)
Amos Kipruto 🇰🇪 Kenya 2:01:39 (London 2026)
Milkesa Mengesha 🇪🇹 Ethiopia 2:03:17 (Berlin 2024)
Tadese Takele Bikila 🇪🇹 Ethiopia 2:03:23 (Tokyo 2025)
Daniel Mateiko 🇰🇪 Kenya 2:03:44 (Tokyo 2026)
Charles Hicks 🇺🇸 USA 2:04:35 (Boston 2026)
Alex Masai 🇰🇪 Kenya 2:04:37 (Chicago 2025)
Suguru Osako 🇯🇵 Japan 2:04:55 (Valencia 2025)
Clayton Young 🇺🇸 USA 2:05:41 (Boston 2026)
Vincent Mauri 🇺🇸 USA 2:05:54 (Toledo 2026)
Galen Rupp 🇺🇸 USA 2:06:07 (Prague 2018)

Source: Chicago Marathon Professional Field

Six men have broken 2:04 in the men's field. Charles Hicks is particularly worth watching: his 2:04:35 is the second-fastest ever by an American, and he chose Chicago's flat course specifically to chase speed. He said: "It's a place where people run fast, and I want to put myself in a position to be part of that." Other Americans include 2024 Olympian Clayton Young, 2017 Chicago champion Galen Rupp, and Vincent Mauri, who made a name for himself with a 2:05:54 win at the Toledo Marathon this year.

👟 Women's Key Athletes

Athlete Country Notes
Brigid Kosgei 🇰🇪 Kenya Former world record holder, two-time Chicago champion, first return since 2019, Tokyo Marathon champion this year (2:14:29)
Sharon Lokedi 🇰🇪 Kenya 2022 New York champion, 2025 & 2026 Boston champion, Chicago debut, first flat Major course
Susanna Sullivan 🇺🇸 USA PB set in Chicago
Natosha Rogers 🇺🇸 USA PB set in Chicago
Dakotah Popehn 🇺🇸 USA Seventh last year

Source: Chicago Marathon Professional Field

Kosgei and Feysa are the only two women with PBs under 2:15. Add Lokedi, and the podium is hard to predict.

⚠️ Note: The elite field may still see additions and withdrawals before race day. If you're publishing a "final athlete watch list" pre-race, check the official Professional Field once more. Notably, American record holder Conner Mantz is not on the 2026 start list.

XIII. How Much Is the 2026 Chicago Marathon Prize Money?

This needs to be broken down. Chicago prize money mainly involves: Open Professional Division, Professional Wheelchair Division, Para Athletics Program, and other awards/prize arrangements. For 2026, the official event has announced a cumulative prize purse exceeding $1 million, with a notably increased professional wheelchair division structure.

♿ 2026 Professional Wheelchair Prize Money: Official announcement shows T53/54 professional wheelchair champions receive $50,000**; the total 2026 men's and women's professional wheelchair prize purse is **$290,000, up from $246,000.

♿ 2026 Para Athletics Prize Money: Starting in 2026, Chicago introduced prize money for the Para Athletics Program for the first time. Across seven divisions, top three men and women in each receive: 🥇 $2,500**, 🥈 **$1,500, 🥉 $1,000. Participants must meet World Para Athletics or national classification requirements.

🏆 Do Regular Runners Get Prize Money? Chicago prize money primarily targets professional/elite and specific competition divisions. Regular runners shouldn't interpret "prize money" as something everyone gets. What mass runners can genuinely pursue: finishing, PB, Age Group awards, Boston Qualifier, Six Star goals, personal challenges.

XIV. 2026 Chicago Marathon Travel: Flights, Hotels, Car Rentals & Booking Platforms

If you're traveling from out of town or overseas specifically for the Chicago Marathon, beyond race entry, the things you need to sort out early are ✈️ flights, 🏨 hotels, 🚗 car rentals, and 📱 U.S. mobile connectivity.

✈️ 1. International / U.S. Domestic Flights

If you're flying to Chicago from New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Canada, Europe, Asia, or elsewhere, compare:

ORD is one of Chicago's main international hubs and the most commonly used airport for international travelers. MDW primarily handles domestic U.S. flights but also operates some international flights.

If your main purpose is running the Chicago Marathon, don't just compare ticket prices—consider arrival times too. Participants must pick up their participant packet in person at the Abbott Health & Fitness Expo at McCormick Place, so don't cut your flight arrival too close.

✈️ Common Flight Booking / Comparison Platforms

Platform Best For Main Use
✈️ Expedia U.S. & international travelers Flights, hotels, car rentals in one place
✈️ KAYAK Price comparers Flight search, price comparison, date & route comparison
✈️ Airline websites Those who've decided on a flight Final purchase, changes, customer service

👉 Practical Tip: Use comparison tools like KAYAK first to understand flight options and prices, then compare airline websites for final price, baggage policy, and change/refund conditions.
⚠️ Don't just compare the fare on the search page. For international flights especially: ticket price + baggage fees + seat fees + change rules + refund rules—the final price is the meaningful comparison.

🏨 2. Chicago Marathon Hotels

Accommodation is often a significant part of the Chicago Marathon travel budget. If your core tasks are: run/watch + city tourism + convenient transit, focus on these areas.

🏨 Grant Park / South Loop

For participants, the biggest advantage is proximity to Grant Park and the race core area.

Pros: 🏃 Easy access to race area 🚶 Some hotels within walking distance of Grant Park 🌳 Near Grant Park, Millennium Park and other attractions 🚇 Relatively easy access to the Loop and other areas
Cons: 💰 High accommodation demand during race weekend 🏨 Popular hotels can be hard to book 💵 Weekend prices may be significantly higher than normal dates

🏨 The Loop

If it's your first time in Chicago and you want to combine: marathon + city tourism + restaurants + attractions + public transit, The Loop is worth considering.

🏨 River North

If your priority is tourism first, race second, River North is also convenient. Restaurants, shopping, nightlife, and city attractions are concentrated here, and you can reach the race area via CTA and other public transit.

🏨 2026 Official Housing Channels: Maritz + Hilton Chicago

Maritz is the official housing partner of the 2026 Bank of America Chicago Marathon. The official housing website is open, and Maritz offers event-related hotel room blocks. The official site notes room availability changes frequently—check back later if you can't find a room matching your itinerary.

Hilton Chicago is the official headquarters hotel of the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. Located at 720 S. Michigan Avenue, it overlooks Grant Park and Lake Michigan, near the start/finish area, Millennium Park, museums, and the Loop.

👉 Official Housing Channel: Enter the Maritz housing system directly from the Chicago Marathon official Hotels page.

🏨 Common Hotel Booking Platforms

Platform Best For Recommended Use
🏨 Agoda International travelers Hotel comparison, room type comparison
🏨 Expedia Package deal lovers Hotel + flight + car rental
🏨 Airbnb Families / groups Apartments, entire homes, group stays
🏨 Maritz Chicago Marathon participants Official event hotel room blocks

🏃 2026 Chicago Marathon Accommodation Special Note

If you're a participant, don't just look at "how many miles from the start" on a map. What really matters: is the route Hotel → CTA / Metra station → Grant Park → Participant entrance → Start corral convenient?

And being close to the start doesn't necessarily mean race morning is easiest. On race day there will be: 🚧 Street closures 🚫 No-parking zones 🚶 Massive pedestrian traffic 🚇 Increased public transit ridership 🚕 Rideshare pickup/dropoff restrictions.

So a hotel near public transit with a clear route can sometimes be more practical than simply chasing "closest to the start."

🚗 3. Car Rentals & Chicago-Area Road Trips

If you're only running the Chicago Marathon and your activities are concentrated in Downtown Chicago, renting a car specifically for the marathon is usually unnecessary.

🚗 When Is Renting Worth It? If you plan to: 🏙️ Travel Chicago + surrounding cities 🏞️ Continue a road trip after the race 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family/group travel with lots of luggage 🚗 Visit Chicago-area attractions 🛣️ Leave Chicago for other cities after the race—then a rental car can be more convenient.

🚗 Common Car Rental Platforms

Platform / Brand Type Best For
🚗 Discover Cars Comparison platform Comparing different rental companies' prices
🚗 SIXT Rental company Direct rental at airport and city locations
🚗 Expedia OTA travel platform Comparing flights, hotels, car rentals together

📱 4. U.S. eSIM / Mobile Network

For international runners, U.S. mobile connectivity is also worth sorting out early. On race weekend, your phone may simultaneously handle: 📍 Runner Tracking 🚇 CTA navigation 🚕 Uber / Lyft 🗺️ Google Maps / Apple Maps 📱 Contacting family and friends 💳 Mobile payments 🏨 Hotel apps 📺 Race live stream 🚨 Emergency contact.

The 2026 official app supports real-time Runner Tracking, interactive course maps, live streaming, and more on race day, making reliable mobile data especially convenient. If your phone supports eSIM, prepare a U.S. eSIM in advance rather than looking for a SIM card after landing at ORD/MDW.

📱 Common Travel eSIMs for International Visitors

eSIM Common Use Case
Airalo Short-term U.S. & global travel data
Nomad U.S. & international travel data plans
Saily Travel data eSIM
Ubigi International travel & cross-border data
Holafly Travelers preferring large / unlimited data plans

⚠️ A Very Important Distinction: Travel eSIM ≠ U.S. local phone number.
Many travel eSIMs primarily provide mobile data and don't necessarily include: 🇺🇸 U.S. local phone number 💬 Traditional SMS 📞 U.S. local voice 📡 Wi-Fi Calling 🔢 Long-term number retention.

If you're just going to Chicago for a few days to watch the race, travel eSIM can focus on: coverage + high-speed data + validity + hotspot + activation.

XV. Getting Around on 2026 Chicago Marathon Race Day

Chicago Marathon race day is absolutely not an ordinary Chicago Sunday. On October 11, 2026, extensive street closures and parking restrictions will be in effect along the course, and different roads have different closure and reopening times. The official estimate is that some roads close from 6:00 a.m., and some near the finish won't fully reopen until the afternoon or even October 12.

For example, official 2026 estimated course road reopening times include:

  • 🛣️ Columbus Drive: Some sections close from approximately 6:00 a.m.

  • 🛣️ LaSalle Street: Some sections expected to gradually reopen around midday

  • 🛣️ Michigan Avenue: Some sections expected to reopen in the afternoon

  • 🛣️ Roosevelt Road: Some sections expected to reopen around 6:00 p.m.

  • 🛣️ Columbus Drive: Roosevelt Road to the finish—expected to remain closed until approximately 3:00 p.m. on October 12

So don't interpret "race over" as "Downtown traffic back to normal immediately." Check official real-time updates for specific roads.

🚇 Prioritize Public Transit on Race Day

For participants and spectators, race day is generally better planned with public transit.

👍 Consider: 🚇 CTA 🚆 Metra 🚆 South Shore Line
The official event specifically encourages participants and spectators to consider the South Shore Line to the Chicago Marathon.
⚠️ Use with caution: 🚕 Uber 🚕 Lyft
❌ Not recommended on the fly: 🚗 Driving into the Grant Park area looking for parking

🚇 Race Day CTA: Don't Just Look for the "Closest Station to the Course"

If you plan to spectate along the course, focus on: 🔴 Red Line 🟢 Green Line 🟠 Orange Line 🔵 Blue Line

Different viewing points have different optimal transit options. So rather than simply finding a "best CTA station," plan by: Viewing location → CTA station → Walking route → Street closure situation.

If you're tracking the same runner all day, especially research several different viewing points in advance rather than moving on the fly on race day. 📱 Also use the official Bank of America Chicago Marathon App for Runner Tracking.

🚕 How to Use Uber / Lyft?

If you must use rideshare on race day, don't set your destination directly to: the Grant Park start area—street closures will affect vehicle access.

The 2026 official transportation guide clearly states: participants using rideshare should be dropped off west of Michigan Avenue and south of Ida B. Wells Drive. The official guide also reminds that rideshare users must allow ample time for race-related traffic congestion and street closures.

So in practice: 🚕 Driver takes you to a permitted outer area → 🚶 You walk into the race area. Don't apply normal weekday Uber/Lyft travel times on race day.

XVI. First Time in Chicago? What to Do Beyond the Race

If you're coming to Chicago specifically for the marathon, you can also plan some relaxed city experiences beyond the race.

🏙️ Millennium Park—See one of Chicago's most famous landmarks: The Bean / Cloud Gate. If it's your first time in Chicago, this is essentially a classic photo stop.

🏛️ Art Institute of Chicago—If you love art, plan half a day. But if you're a participant, schedule the visit after the race or earlier in race week—don't plan long walks the day before the race.

🌊 Lake Michigan—Chicago's lakefront views are iconic. Plan relaxed walks before or after the race, but participants especially should watch their walking volume.

🏙️ Chicago Riverwalk—Great for relaxing before or after the race, seeing city architecture and river views.

🏗️ Chicago Architecture Cruise—If it's your first time in Chicago and you're interested in architecture, the architecture cruise is highly recommended. Chicago's skyline is itself a lesson in urban architecture.

But for participants: don't plan a walking-intensive tourist day the day before the race. Your legs are more important than sightseeing. 😂

🥯 What to Eat Marathon Weekend?

Chicago has plenty of great food, but participants shouldn't suddenly challenge themselves the day before the race with: 🍕 Deep-dish pizza 🌶️ Super-spicy wings 🍺 Large beers 🍔 Giant burgers. Not that you can't eat these—just don't suddenly eat something you haven't tested during training the day before the race.

More important: 🍚 Familiar carbs 🍗 Moderate protein 💧 Hydrate the way you've verified during training 🍌 Familiar foods ❌ Avoid unfamiliar foods ❌ Don't suddenly change your diet structure.

If you've already tested a pre-race meal during training, stick with the familiar pattern before the race. After the race, feel free to consider: 🍕 Chicago Deep Dish 🌭 Chicago-style Hot Dog 🥩 Italian Beef 🍔 Burgers 🥤 Celebration drinks.

The short version: Don't experiment on race day. Reward yourself after. 😂

XVII. Participant Race Week Packing Checklist

If you're a participant, bookmark this directly.

🪪 Documents: Passport / ID, Packet Pick-up email, Hotel confirmation, Flight / itinerary info, Credit cards / payment methods

🏃 Running Gear: Running Shoes, Race Socks, Race Outfit, Watch, Sunglasses, Cap, Energy Gels, Familiar nutrition

💧 Hydration Gear: Soft Flask, Fuel Belt, Handheld Water Bottle, approved personal containers (⚠️ Any type of Hydration Backpack is not allowed on course—see Section VI)

📱 Electronics: Phone, Charger, Power Bank, eSIM, Headphones

🧳 Post-Race: Change of clothes, Warm layers, Hotel key card, Transit card / payment methods

XVIII. How to Check the 2026 Chicago Marathon Weather

The race is close, but don't judge race-day temperatures from long-range forecasts too early. Chicago's October weather can vary significantly—focus on the 3–5 days before the race. Check: start temperature, feels-like temperature, high, wind speed, humidity, precipitation probability, temperature changes during the race. Especially since Chicago sits on Lake Michigan, wind conditions are worth watching.

❌ Don't make gear decisions based on weather a month out;
✅ Adjust based on the latest forecast a few days before the race.

XIX. Where to Find Your Runner After the Race

If your friend or family member is running: don't assume the finish line is the best meeting point—the finish area has race operations and crowd management (see Section IX). The official 27th Mile Post-Race Party (begins at 09:30 on race day) serves as an important post-race meeting area.

📱 Plan A: Runner Tracking—use the official app to track your runner

📍 Plan B: Agree on a meeting spot in advance—be clear about the location before the race

📞 Plan C: Call after the race

Don't just say "See you at the finish." 😂 On Chicago Marathon day, "meet at the finish" might be one of the least reliable meeting plans.

XX. Where to Find 2026 Chicago Marathon Results?

The 2026 official app will provide real-time Tracking, Leaderboards, race results, and Professional Athlete Profiles, with complete results available in the app in real time (see Section X for app features). After the race, if you plan to write a post-race article, continue to watch: Overall Results, Elite Results, Age Group Results, Course Records, Personal Bests, National Records.

XXI. How to Prepare If You're Just Watching from Home

International Viewers: Prepare in advance: check your local broadcaster's specific arrangements, prepare TV/internet streaming devices, download the official app, set up Runner Tracking, and save Bib Numbers in advance if friends are running. Don't lock in a specific channel or app too early—reconfirm close to race day (see Section XI for complete broadcast info).

🇺🇸 U.S.: Prepare NBC 5 Chicago, Telemundo Chicago, Peacock, Roku, nbcchicago.com, telemundochicago.com, NBC Chicago App, Telemundo Chicago App. U.S. TV and national streaming broadcast: 07:00–11:00 CT. Websites and related apps provide additional finish line coverage until 15:00 CT (see Section XI for complete info).

XXII. Why Is the Chicago Marathon Worth Watching?

As a sports fan, I think the most interesting thing about Chicago isn't just "who wins?" It combines:

  • 🏃 Top-Level Competition: World-class marathoners compete together. 2026 men's field has six runners under 2:04; women's field features Kosgei, Lokedi, and Feysa—three elite athletes together

  • 🌆 City Sports Culture: 29 neighborhoods linked into one complete course

  • 👟 Mass Runner Stories: Over 55,000 runners, each with their own goals

  • ❤️ Charity: Chicago has long provided a fundraising platform for numerous charities

  • 👀 City Spectators: Approximately 1.7 million people cheering along the course

So you'll find: Chicago isn't "50,000+ people running on a course"—it's an entire city participating.

XXIV. 2027 Chicago Marathon Preview: Registration Dates, Drawing, Qualifying & Fees

If you're planning to register for the 2027 Chicago Marathon, the single most important thing to do: add October 8, 2026, 08:00 CT to your calendar. Chicago is typically held on the second Sunday of October. Official future race dates: 2026: October 11; 2027: October 10; 2028: October 8; 2029: October 7. Note these dates may still change.

🎯 When Is 2027 Chicago Marathon Registration?

If you don't have a 2026 entry, the most important dates now are:

Item Time
🟢 2027 Registration Opens October 8, 2026, 08:00 CT
🔴 2027 Registration Closes October 29, 2026, 14:00 CT
🎲 Drawing Results Announced December 8, 2026
💳 Drawing Winners Payment Deadline December 15, 2026, 23:59 CT
🏃 2027 Chicago Marathon October 10, 2027

Source: Chicago Marathon Apply

Both guaranteed and non-guaranteed entry applications for 2027 must be completed within the October 8–October 29 application window.

📌 Note: Registering Earlier Doesn't Increase Your Chances.
Submitting a general drawing application on October 8 ≠ better odds than submitting October 28. The official policy clearly states application submission time does not affect selection chances. Submitting multiple applications does not improve odds—the system removes duplicate applications before the drawing. So the correct approach for general runners isn't "apply repeatedly like crazy," but submit one correct, complete application within the window and wait for the drawing.

🏃 What 2027 Registration Options Are Available?

The 2027 registration system has two main categories:

The official event reviews eligibility; qualified applicants receive guaranteed entries.

🎲 Option 1: General Drawing.

If you don't have a qualifying time, Legacy status, or other guaranteed entry, the simplest path is the general drawing. Registration: October 8, 2026, 08:00 CT → October 29, 14:00 CT. There's no application fee for the drawing itself. 2027 drawing applicants will receive eligibility notification on December 8, 2026. If selected, you must complete payment and registration by December 15, 23:59 CT, or your entry is cancelled.

🎯 How to Prepare for the Drawing? Prepare in advance: Chicago Marathon official account, personal info (name, DOB), contact info, passport/ID info, credit card, overseas address and contact info, emergency contact info; if you want a better start corral, prepare qualifying performance data. International runners especially: don't create an account for the first time on October 8.

⏱️ Option 2: Time Qualifier.

If you've run fast enough, you can get a guaranteed 2027 entry directly through the official Time Qualifier—a very important registration path.

🏅 2027 Chicago Marathon Qualifying Standards

Age Men Women Non-Binary
16–34 2:50:00 3:20:00 3:20:00
35–39 2:55:00 3:25:00 3:25:00
40–44 3:00:00 3:30:00 3:30:00
45–49 3:10:00 3:40:00 3:40:00
50–54 3:15:00 3:50:00 3:50:00
55–59 3:25:00 3:55:00 3:55:00
60–64 3:40:00 4:15:00 4:15:00
65–69 3:55:00 4:30:00 4:30:00
70–74 4:15:00 4:45:00 4:45:00
75–79 4:30:00 5:00:00 5:00:00
80+ 4:50:00 5:20:00 5:20:00

These are the standards published on the Chicago Marathon official 2027 application page. Age is taken on race day (October 10, 2027).

⏰ 2027 Time Qualifier Result Validity: The 2027 application page specifies the qualifying result window as January 1, 2025 – October 29, 2026. Results must be from a full marathon, on a certified course, verifiable, and submitted during the application window. The event accepts results from courses certified by USATF, World Athletics, or similar governing bodies.

⚠️ Half Marathon Results Cannot Be Used for Chicago Time Qualifier: This is a common mistake for first-time applicants. The official Time Qualifier requires a Full Marathon. So ❌half marathon, ❌50K, ❌10K, ❌virtual marathon cannot substitute. Only full marathon results certified by World Athletics, USATF, or similar are accepted.

👴 Option 3: Chicago Marathon Legacy Finisher.

If you've completed at least 5 Chicago Marathons in the past 10 years, you can get a guaranteed entry through Legacy Finisher. Key words: 5 times + past 10 years + Chicago Marathon itself. Not "I've run 5 World Majors" and not "I've run 5 other marathons."

⚠️ 2020 Special Situation: For 2020 Chicago Marathon registrants whose race became a Virtual Experience, Legacy eligibility follows official rules. The official policy clearly states 2020 Virtual Experience results do not count as official results and cannot be used as qualifying times for other races.

❤️ Option 4: Charity Program.

If you didn't get into the drawing and don't have a qualifying time, the charity program is another very important guaranteed entry channel. 2027 official charity program: official charities offer guaranteed entries, first-come first-served, closing September 10, 2027 or when the charity team reaches capacity (whichever comes first). Minimum fundraising requirement: $2,500 USD**. U.S. resident charity entry fee: **$325; non-U.S. resident: $335.

💡 Note: "Entry fee" and "fundraising requirement" are two different things: $335 is the non-U.S. resident charity entry fee; $2,500 is the minimum fundraising requirement. Don't conflate the two numbers.

✈️ Option 5: Official Tour Operator.

For international runners, this path is especially worth attention. The official Tour Operator Program partners with approved travel operators to provide race entries, flights, hotels, local transportation, and other race travel services for runners from certain countries/regions. Specific packages are managed by the operators; prices and inclusions vary.

Official reminder: Only travel operators in the official Tour Operator Program can provide guaranteed race entries, and not all countries have approved operators.

📅 2027 Official Tour Operator more information will be announced on December 8, 2026. Applications are expected to run until August 10, 2027.

🏃‍♂️ Option 6: Bank of America Chicago Distance Series.

This channel is interesting. It consists of three races: 🟢 Shamrock Shuffle 8K, 🟡 Chicago 13.1, 🔴 Chicago Marathon. If you complete all three in the same year, you get a guaranteed entry to the next year's Chicago Marathon.

🎯 2026 Three-Race Completion → 2027 Guaranteed Entry: If you completed the 2026 Shamrock Shuffle 8K, 2026 Chicago 13.1, and 2026 Chicago Marathon, you qualify for a 2027 guaranteed entry.

🏃‍♀️ 2027 Three-Race Completion → 2028 Guaranteed Entry: 2027 Distance Series: Shamrock Shuffle 8K (March 21, 2027), Chicago 13.1 (June 6, 2027), Chicago Marathon (October 10, 2027). Complete all three → receive Distance Series medal + 2028 Chicago Marathon guaranteed entry.

🔄 Option 7: 2026 Cancelled Entry.

If you registered for the 2026 Chicago Marathon and qualify under the official general cancellation policy: 2026 cancellation → 2027 guaranteed qualification. But an important detail: you still need to submit a 2027 application and pay the 2027 entry fee again.

🤰 Option 8: Pregnancy & Postpartum Policy.

If a 2026 participant cancels under the official Pregnancy and Postpartum Policy, they can re-apply for 2027, receive a guaranteed entry, and do not need to pay the entry fee again.

⚡ Option 9: High Performance Program.

For elite marathon athletes. Reference standards: Men < 2:25:00; Women < 2:45:00; Non-Binary < 2:45:00; Masters Men < 2:35:00, Masters Women < 2:50:00, Masters Non-Binary < 2:50:00. High Performance Program capacity: 300. Applications close September 1, 2027, or when capacity is reached.

♿ Option 10: Para Athletics Program.

Chicago also has a Para Athletics Program. Athletes who meet relevant qualifications can apply through the official path.

🏨 When Should You Book a Chicago Hotel?

If you're committed to the 2027 Chicago Marathon, don't wait until a month before the race to think about accommodation. Official housing partner: Maritz. Official headquarters hotel: Hilton Chicago. For international runners: solve race entry first, then handle hotels as early as possible.

✈️ How Should International Runners Plan for Chicago?

If you're coming from outside the U.S., break the entire trip into:

  • 🏃 ① Race Entry: Solve drawing / qualifying / Legacy / charity / official tour operator first

  • ✈️ ② Flights: Then handle arrival at ORD vs. MDW, how many days early, time zone adjustment, return timing

  • 🏨 ③ Hotels: Prioritize near Grant Park, the Loop, River North, official housing partner hotels

  • 🚇 ④ Race Day Transit: Official recommendation is CTA, not driving into downtown on race day (see Section XV)

  • 📱 ⑤ U.S. Connectivity: Your phone is crucial during the race. Prepare a U.S. eSIM in advance if your phone supports it (see Section XVI)

👀 Not a Runner, Just Going to Watch?

Then you can plan ahead too. Chicago is a classic city marathon, with a route passing through multiple neighborhoods. The biggest challenge on race day isn't "finding a place to stand and watch"—it's how to use CTA to move between locations. Study the official course map, street closures, and public transit arrangements in advance (see Sections IX, X, XV).
